Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 protects students with disabilities from discrimination based on disability. A student who does not qualify for an IEP, including a student with dyslexia, may nevertheless be entitled to protection under Section 504. For example, a student with dyslexia may be substantially limited in reading in that he finds it challenging to read required class material in a timely way. The student may require additional time or a multi-sensory approach to learning. Accommodations or services for students who qualify for protection under Section 504 are typically documented in a written Section 504 plan.
